Location & Lifestyle
Fort Chambray was built in the 18th century by the Order of Saint John (Knights of Malta). It was named after Jacques-François de Chambray, a French knight who served as governor of Gozo from 1749 to 1750 under Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca. Fort Chambray is situated close to Mġarr Harbour, providing direct access to transport links and nearby amenities. It is also within reach of the wider village of Ghajnsielem and surrounding coastal areas.
Historical Background
Construction began in 1749 and was completed in 1771. The fort was originally built for military defence, particularly to protect Gozo from naval threats including Ottoman incursions and piracy.
The structure includes bastions, curtain walls, courtyards, former officers’ quarters and gun emplacements. Its design reflects a mix of military and Baroque architectural influences.
